That night, the Japanese planned on making a substantial attempt to try and retake the Point. If they could once again secure this elevated position, they could set up mortars, automatic weapons, another 47mm anti-boat gun (still in its crate), and perhaps some light artillery to again outflank the White and Orange beaches and tear into their supply lines with withering, enfilading fire. The attack was scheduled for 2200 hours and was to be carried out by some 500 determined Japanese troops, supported by several mortar batteries. The enemy force was told to stop at nothing in rooting out the Americans and recapturing the Point.
